The Killer Birthday

Happy 75th Birthday to Jerry Lee Lewis! You are still The Killer!

I can’t wait to see him at Viva Las Vegas this year. I actually heard that he was recording another album. I thought that his last album would be his last…..it even has last in the title.

“Last Man Standing” is a really good album though, so if you don’t have it, I would recommend it. So, what will he call his newest album? Still Last Man Standing? Last Man Standing, Again? How about…..”I can’t Sit Down!”……Ah ha ha ha.

What do you think of that Jerry Lee?

Ah....Even at 75, He has still got it! Long live The Killer! Happy Birthday Jerry Lee.

The SideWynders at The VU Bar

Yesterday night the SideWynders played Rockabilly Monday Night at the local watering hole, The VU Ultra Bar. This bar is really low key, and great for a Monday night. There is always plenty of seating and cheap drinks to be had. They also have a good size dance floor and patio. A local band of young guns, The Cochina kings kicked off the night early. They are a talented group of guys that play a little bit of everything: rockabilly, rock-n-roll, blues, and even some 90s covers. They are always fun, but as you know, we were there to see our friends, The SideWynders. Did you know we formally met them at this exact bar? Right from the start we were destined to be good friends. The SideWynders always put on a good show, even if it is a Monday night at a dive bar. For this set, they had a few guest appearances: Stephanie sang a few songs with them, Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague played guitar on one song, and drums on another, and Zack played acoustic guitar on one song. It was a lot of fun. Ramon sang “Cash On The Barrelhead” for me, and I was so happy! Thanks Ramon! Zack and I got to dance to a few songs, which is good, because we need to sharpen up for Rhythm Rocker in two weeks. The boys played two sets, and ended the night about 1am. Thanks to The SideWynders and everyone else for coming out to our neck of the woods!

Happy Birthday to Mrs. Sandra Sprague!

Sunday was Sandra’s birthday, and we were happy to be able to celebrate it with her. They hosted an intimate gathering at their casa. Which, by the way, is beautifully decked out in Hey-Wake and mid-mod from top to bottom. The birthday girl looked beautiful in a vintage floral dress, vintage wedges, and a perky blue bow. Everyone brought a dish, Sandra made delicious chicken, and I made birthday cupcakes. We ate, drank, and talked all evening. Sugarballs had just come back from a mini-tour of New Orleans with Deke, so despite running on no sleep, he had a slew of stories and pictures to share. By the end of the night, the boys started a jam session, and the girls raided Sandra’s barkcloth collection. It was a great evening. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Sprague for hosting and inviting us into their home again. Happy Birthday Sandra!

Friday at Weber’s With Kim Lenz!

On Friday we went to Weber’s Rockabilly Friday Night to see Kim Lenz. She didn’t play many shows while she was here from Texas, so we knew we couldn’t miss this one. Man, am I glad I didn’t! The Rhythm Shakers opened the night. I have seen them once before, but it didn’t make much of an impression on me that night. Well, this night was different! Marlene really “made it”. She has a great stage presence and a lot of energy. I loved that she actually played the guitar, and really rocked the hell out of it. She was super cute and danced all around, kicked off her shoes, got on the floor….the whole shebang! It was really entertaining.

Karen and Marlene

In between the two bands, DJ Lola was spinning tunes. This was my first time hearing her, and she was great too! She played a ton of great jivers, some strollers, but unfortunately, few boppers, but maybe that was just due to the crowd response. She was a super cute girl too. The dance floor was the most packed I have ever seen it there! Go DJ Lola! Then the main event……Kim Lenz!

Kim, Alana and I

She looked perfect as always. She wore a tight dress and heels, but never let that stop her from wailing on her guitar and singing her heart out. She did a nice long set, with most of the favorites. The crowd was loving her and she was loving the crowd. The dance floor was packed with swingers, until she slowed it down with “Tennessee Waltz”, and I got to waltz for the first time. What fun! Kim was really amazing. I am so glad we got another chance to see her while she was in town. After Kim’s set, DJ Lola kept the joint rockin’. We danced all night. I got passed around like a hot cake! Sadly, the party had to end at 2am. Boo! In my opinion, this was the best time I have had so far at Weber’s. Maybe it was the two rockin’ red heads, maybe it was DJ Lola, and maybe it was being with all my girls…who knows? But it was all about the femmes that night!

Joe’s Great American Bar and Grill

You may have heard me talk about Joe’s before. Joe’s is a little bar in Burbank, that plays host to a ton of great bands…..Most recently Lucky Stars on Saturday night and The Hi-Lo Playboys on Monday night. Every now and then they have a Saturday night show, but every Monday night they do western swing night and every Tuesday night is blues, roots and swing. On these nights they get a really big dancing crowd, and even have lessons on Tuesday night for $5. Last night they had a fast lindy hop contest, and that was really exciting to watch. Everyone was so good, especially the winners of the contest. They were the most animated in their dancing, which made them really stand out. The contest was hosted by DJ Lorenzo and the music was provided by The Hi-Lo Playboys. This was my first time seeing the Hi-Lo Playboys and I had very high hopes. This is an all star band: Dave “Pappy” Stuckey (vocals and acoustic), Tommy Harkenrider (lead guitar), Shorty Poole (lap steel), Carlitos (drums), and Wally Hersom (slap bass). So, as we all assumed…….they are AMAZING!!! They are instantly in the league of other western swing greats like The Lucky Stars, The Barnstompers, etc. Man, was it was good to see Pappy up front again! They did 3 sets, and had some of the members from The SideWynders up to sing a few. The crowed loved them, and the dance floor was packed from the first song to the last. DJ Lorenzo was spinning tunes in between the band’s sets, so no ones feet ever had the chance to cool down. Overall, it was a swingin’ good time for a Monday!

The Hi-Lo Playboys

Guest-starring The Side-Wynders

My new friends! On the left, Deen from Australia. On the right, Sara from Sweden. I love these girls! They are bright, beautiful, and know their rockabilly. These are my kinda girls! Welcome to LA.

What trip to Burbank would be complete without eating at Bob's Big Boy at 2am? We had to show Sara this classic "All American" 50s dinner!

If this sounds like your kinda time, Joes is hosting The Crown City Bombers tonight. Check it out!

Route 66 Car Show Review!

This past Saturday we went to the Route 66 Car Show. This was the first time we have attended this event. It takes place on the city streets of downtown San Bernardino. We got there 4 hours prior to the set time (2pm), because we knew that the street would be closed down to traffic for the show, and we needed to get our cars as close as possible to the stage to unload equipment. We had these passes to show the guards, and they were supposed to let us through the road barricades, so that we could drive to the stage location. Well, it seemed like every road was closed off a mile from the stage site, and none of the guards knew what they were doing. It took all of us an hour driving around and talking to every guard before we could get through. It was horribly frustrating. We finally got through, and headed strait to the beer garden to drink away our stress with Sugarballs, Sandra, and Bobby. The beers were a good price at $5 for draft. That helped a lot. He he.

There were two stages, one where Kim Lenz and Deke Dickerson and the Ecophonics were playing that night, and a smaller one a few blocks away were Derek Dupree and The Slingers, Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague and His 18 Wheelers, and The Buddy and Suzie Combo were playing. In between the two stages they had blocks and blocks of street vendors, beer gardens and cars on display. This was easily the biggest car show I have ever been to, geographically wise. There was stuff going on for blocks each way you looked- cars, RV BBQ parties, and music. The stage that Sugarballs was playing on was a smaller stage, located in one of the parking lots. That parking lot had a beer garden, food vendors, a pinstripe display and a few cars. It was definitely enough to keep us entertained for a few hours before the show. The first band on was an all kid band, but I missed their band name. They had a ton of members ranging from 7-15 years old that rotated positions throughout the show. They did only 1950s juke box covers, and it was really cute. The next band on was a friend of mine, Derek Dupree. This was the first time I have seen his band. I actually didn’t know he had a band until the moment he showed up. Ha ha. He had a ton of originals, all with a dancing beat. He threw in harmonica in a lot of them, which I really liked. It was fun to see him play!

Derek Dupree and The Slingers

Next up was the rockstar himself, Sugarballs! He is possibly the most entertaining performer I have ever seen on stage. He could be a stand up comedian, really, but he never lets that overshadow his immense musical talent. The car show crowd has really been loving him, especially the few truck drivers in the audience. He has a new fancy guitar pedal that has multiple prerecorded truck driving sounds and he creatively adds these sounds to the set. It’s genius! He put on a great show as always.

Chris Sugarballs Sprague and His 18 Wheelers

Sandra Sprague and Buddy and Suzie!

After that the Buddy and Suzie combo went on. We had to pack up the equipment really quick in order to get Sugarballs off to the other stage where he was playing with Deke Dickerson. Sadly, I got to the other stage as fast as I could, but only caught half of Kim Lenz’s last song.

Kim Lenz

I was really looking forward to seeing her, but I had to help with band duties. Sigh. Luckily, after the show we had plenty of time with the lovely Kim Lenz! She told us that her next show is this Friday, at Weber’s Rockabilly Fridays Nights! So, we are going for sure. I have to tell you, Kim is ever more beautiful, talented, and sweet in person. I just adore her! She is my little Jessica Rabbit. He he.

Watching Deke with Kim.

Deke Dickerson and The Echo-phonics

We all watched Deke Dickerson together, and man, was that a great show! The stage was large, concrete, and out lined in roses. No, really! The sun had gone down, and the warm night was downright enjoyable! Deke had Brent Harding (of Social Distortion) on slap bass, and Sugarballs on drums. He did a lot of his hits, did some eefing with a giant Reese Peanut Butter Cup hat on, and told some great jokes. As usual, it was a great show!

Proof! Eefing with a Peanut Butter Cup hat on.

Zack and Kim

After the show I had the pleasure of going back stage and eating a lot of junk food. Yippy! That is when I got to meet the super cute boys from Mad Max and The Wildones. They are a family band of father and sons, and boy are these sons talented and cute to boot! It makes me want to have an army of sons to start my own family band! I will do another post on them someday.

Fruit tray anyone?

We headed out at about 11pm to Joe’s in Burbank to see The Lucky Stars. Everyone ended up going there from the car show, so it ended up being a sort of unofficial after party. It was a blast. The lucky stars did multiple sets, and even did an encore with Kim Lenz singing. We all danced, drank, and hoop-n-hollered until they bar kicked us out. We got home about 3am …….what a day!

The Lucky Stars!

The Lucky Stars with Kim Lenz!

Tonight we are heading back to Joe’s in Burbank to see the High-Lo Playboys! I will keep you posted!

Hope to see a few friend there!

Todays prompt was: Repost the blog title you are most proud of and why.

The blog title that came to mind was: "I am so rockabilly........ that I shit with deadstock toilet paper".

That is still one of my favorite jokes! Thanks Alana! I love that! If you know me, you know I love to joke around, be sarcastic, and make fun of myself. The rockabilly scene is different than anything else in the world right now. We are all crazy......crazy nostalgic. I really would buy deadstock toilet paper to display in my bathroom, and maybe even use it if I had enough. If that's not crazy, I don't know what is!

SITS Girls Giveaway!

http://www.thesitsgirls.com/2010/09/improve-your-html-blog/

SITS Girls are hosting the most amazing giveaway, and I am all over it! They have organized a Back to Blogging challenge, and the more you participate in it, the more chances you have to win. They organized a weeks worth of writing topics, that are designed to help you re-evaluate your blog. Did I mention what you can win if you participate????

I didn’t?

Well, thanks to their sponsors: Standards of Excellence, Westar Kitchen and Bath, and Florida Builder Appliances………

They are giving away an Electrolux washer and dryer!!!!! Dang, I want that. They are an amazing color that will match perfect with my home. You can see the washer and dryer in the mud room from the kitchen, and this set just so happens to match my kitchen perfectly! Yippy. My old washer and dryer are making all sorts of racket and smell like sulfur. I need this new set. Really, I do. They are named Thelma and Louise, and they told me they want to come home with me.

Okay. Hold your excitement. I didn’t win yet. I still have to participate, so back to the challenge. The second blog challenge is to repost something that you wish more people had read, and why it is important to you. For today’s challenge I am reposting an old post, from the days before my comments worked (in retrospect, maybe I should have left that feature broken, it was less interesting then, but quiet and peaceful). This was hopefully first of many “Trending Now” post, but is currently still the one and only. I thought it was my best tongue and cheek writing, and very sassy! I also love the pictures I found to go with it. Did I mention I love bows?

Here it is again for your viewing pleasure:

Attention all Hepkittin’s and Honey Dippers! This just in:

Flowers are out, and bows are in!Hair flowers have been a long standing staple in a rockabilly gals arsenal, but I know I am not the only one thinking it’s a little worn out. We want to be fabulously fresh, not worn out! So I am here to share one of my latest obsessions: BOWS! Bows are young, cute and fresh, in that sexy juvenile delinquent way! They are so cheap and easy to find too! I just head down to my favorite craft store, and buy ribbon by the yard. I use about 1 and ¼ a yard to make the perfect headband bow. Now you don’t want it too long, because it gets floppy and saggy, and we don’t want to associate ourselves with those words! Keep it short so it is perky! I prefer a matte color for a vintage look. We don’t want our bow to out shine our hair, now do we? Leave the shiny ribbon for the wee ones. I also don’t like it too thick or too thin either. It has to be just right. It has to make a statement but not overpower the hairstyle. Remember gals, a bow is an accessory; it is not to take the place of a well executed hairstyle. Bows are timeless, so why do they seem to be lost in time? I don’t see many people wearing them anymore. If you do your research, I guarantee you will find just as many WWII pinups, Hollywood starlets, and songbirds in bows as in hair flowers, if not more! Here are a few I just dug up:

Those shorts! The top! The shoes! ......and a bow to top it off!Perfect look for a summer day.

Again a perfect outfit, topped off with a great hairstyle and a cute red bow!Fabulous!

Here's how a modern Doll does it!At Viva Las Vegas with Claire. I got this hairstyle idea from Betty Grable.

Have fun with this "trending now" tip! Make sure to try it out and send me the pics!

Dollie’s Fall Fashion Guide

Fall has officially arrived! I am welcoming the cool down, and have already started wearing my cardigans, as it has been a little chilly around here. I will have to put away the cotton frocks until next spring. The good news is, as one door closes, another one opens! Goodbye cotton, pastels, and sandals……Hello gabardine, neutrals, and trousers!

If you are like me, you are a little tired of your old tried-and-true cardigans, high-waist pants, and saddle shoes. I want something new and fresh this season! So, after some quick research, I have compiled a list of my must-haves for this fall, and some "wants":
VINTAGE:

1950’s Deadstock Gabardine Angora Dress from Ebay- Perfect fabric and color for fall!

1940s Gabardine Wool Suit from Ebay- This is very similar to a dress I own. I am wearing it in a picture to the left.

Ex Sm 1950s Reversable Printed Gabardine Rickey Jacket from Ebay- Don’t let the boys have all the fun! I am on a mission to get an extra small ricky jacket like this for myself. I am going to pair it with my Jeanies (see below), an extra skinny belt, and some loafers. I think it would be a knock out!

Vintage Beaded Cardigan on Ebay…..perfect color for fall! Pair this with a wool A- line skirt!

Celuloid leaves necklace from Ebay- Every girl needs one of these!

1940’s Vintage Brown Leather Peep Toe Heels from Ebay. I have a pair like this is black with white stitching, and I wear them all year around!
REPRO:

Tweed Ladies Swing Trousers from Heyday -If these don’t scream fall, I don’t know what does! They would look perfect paired with a 1940s long (slightly-puffed) sleeve blouse in an orange and brown print. You know the type I am talking about? The really expensive kind!

Dungaree Dolls coveralls by Fredies of Pinewood- Great for casual autumn wear.

Jeanies by Fredies of Pinewood…the only jeans I wear!

What did I forget on this little list?

Just mix and match your old pieces, with a few new, and it will breath a whole new live into your wardrobe. Dress up or down with accessories like hats, scarves and gloves. Just make sure you always dress for the occasion, always look your best, and strut!

XOXO
