Lyons Cruise and Pinup Contest

Last Wednesday we went to Lyons Cruise Night in old town Newhall. The car show and cruise are put on by  the Fly By Knights car club. There was also a pinup contest put on by a local photographer, Ambitious Misfit Photography.

It was my actual birthday that day, so I was lucky enough to have some good friends come out and support me in the pinup contest, as it was crowd cheering based. Chris and Sandra Sprague also brought me a birthday gift- a vintage tiki pineapple tooth pick set for my bar! I love it! Big thanks to Chris and Sandra!

There were a ton of cool dogs at this car show. These huge great danes were my favorite!

I wore my favorite new outfit- the two piece 40s playsuit from Atomic Swag that I got at VLV!

We made sure to walk around and look at all the cool cars. This little pink sweetie melted my heart! It's for sale if anyone wants to buy it for me.

Then the pinup contest started. It was only 8 girls, but they were all so cute!

We had to answer a question. I don't remember what it was, but my answer was "world peace". Okay, not really, but this sounds funnier for the point of the blog. My answer was actually really good though, and didn't evolve any hippie talk.

Then they had everyone yell for us, until it was down to three, two and one. The competition was really tough,  (Susie Homemaker had cookies!!) but I won! I was so excited! I couldn't believe it! Sugarballs says it is because he yelled really loud for me! I had some guys tell me that they yelled for me to because they see me around town and know that I am true-blue and wear this style every day. I appreciated that. I also had some people tell me that I look like a pro on stage now. I guess all this MCing, pinup contests, and publicity stuff is helping me be more confident. Who knows, but look out world!

There was the cutest lil' girl ever to give me a beautiful bouquet from Steve's Florist. It was bigger than she was!

Then I took a few pics with Ambitious Misfit Photography showing off my goodies: the bouquet and a marvelous sash! I also will be photographed and featured as Miss August in her 2012 calender! I can't wait to show you all when it comes out!

I also got the best birthday gift ever- one dozen cupcakes from Bake You Happy! That is the best cupcake shop in town, in my opinion! They won Cupcake Wars, and boy does it show!

I went strait home an put my flowers in water.

If you can believe it, they are even more beautiful now that the Lillys and gladiolas opened. I think I will contact them about wedding flowers.

Chris and Sandra came over to share our cupcakes and read Rockin' the Rockabilly Scene!

I ate so many cupcakes (we sampled a few flavors) that I didn't even want dinner! That was fine, because what could top a lobster lunch and all these cupcakes?

This was a pretty great birthday!

Hawaiian Is So Last Year

Now it is all about Jamaican prints! Okay, not really. Hawaiian is still boss, but I had to think of some fun title  for this post about my new Ruth Clarage Hand Printed Original of Montego Bay!

This was birthday gift from my fabulous fiance, and is basically my dream set! It is a four piece resort set, that was hand printed in Jamaica and is one of a kind. If that wasn't great enough, it is also DEADSTOCK! Wow!

My fav piece is the playsuit for sure. The fabric is light pink with a hot pink print palm trees, tropical flowers, and pineapples. The straps can be worn the way shown, or halter style if tied behind the neck. There are little shorts with an attached sarong-style tie coverup skirt.

The bust is beautifully shaped in a sweetheart with a built in bullet bra. I must say, this playsuit looks bangin' on me -very flattering! Whaa hoooo!

The back is still tightly smocked and in perfect condition.

Then there is a cover-up top. It is sleeveless and buttons up the front with an interesting button pattern (two buttons then a space, then two more buttons, etc). The length is nice and long so it comes just to the bottom of the butt.

Then there is a pair of high-waist shorts with bloomers attached inside.

Last but not least is a full cover-up dress! The waist is nipped with a little tie. Too cute!

I didn't get very good close up pics of the tag-sorry! It is very cute with seahorses too!

Inside it talks about the care of the garment, etc. It also mentions that she sold matching ceramic jewelry. Now I NEED to find the matching jewelry for this! Please contact me if anyone has any info or pics on any Ruth Clarage jewelry.

This set came from the San Diego estate of the late Maria Helen Alvarez Smith. She was a TV pioneer and one of the original investors of the Disneyland Hotel. She was reported as a beautiful brunette who was well traveled, wealthy, and a shopaholic. From what I can tell she also had an affinity for multi-piece matching outfits, as she had at least 3 from the small sampling I saw on etsy. This set was the earliest, most colorful, and the only one with original tags. I am thankful that she had great style and kept her clothing in perfect condition. I would have loved to meet her, as I am sure we would have a lot in common!

Now this may seem like enough of a gift from Zachary, but he also got me my Viva Las Vegas ticket! So, I bet you can guess where you will be seeing this little gem!  Lets hope Maria Helen Alvarez Smith's spirit helps me win the vintage swimsuit contest next year at the tiki pool party!

My B-Day at DiPiazza's

Last weekend we went to DiPiazza's in Long Beach for Tom Ingram's show. He had Blue Collar Combo and The Side-Wynders (two bands from this years VLV lineup) playing, burlesque dancing, and a $5 tee shirt sale. We were also celebrating my birthday!

I had never been to DiPizza's before, but it was a cool place! It is a pizzeria and bar that was decorated in cool posters and event flyers. There was a nice big stage and dance floor, making the place perfect for shows.

With burlesque star Kitten DeVille!
She was there for a burlesque show prior to Tom Ingram's show that night.

Blue Collar Combo was the first band on for the night.

With my favorite Australian, Deen Dioria.

Blondes just want to have fun!

Glad to see some dancers cutting a rug to Blue Collar Combo. That cutie in the green dress is a blog reader-yeehaw!

Me with my Pappy!

With my well-dressed fiance! This red rose dress was from the lovely Amber Foxx. I love it!

Between bands there was a great performance by my favorite burlesque dancer, Tara MiSioux!

The girls, relaxing with a cocktail after a hard days work!

Next up was the main event: The SideWynders featuring Shorty Poole on steel guitar and Carlitos Reynoso on washboard.

This is one good looking crowd!

Then the SideWynders sang Happy Birthday to me, and Alana presented me with a cake. How sweet!

After eating a ton of cake, I decided to dance it off.

Then I opened a gift from Alana:

A beautiful, black.....

sweater dress!!

This will be perfect for this winter! It is very figure flattering also! A big big thanks to Alana! I love that girl!

As I mentioned, there was also a $5 tshirt sale at the event, so I stocked up:

I got this VLV wife beater, perfect for the gym!

I also got this cool halter top. Who knew they were making VLV halter tops now?

I finally got a Rockabilly Rave USA shirt! Once the event was no more, I immediately regretted never buying the shirts. So I was so excited to see Tom had some at this event. This is my new go-to casual tee. It is so soft and curve-hugging!

I also got this Rockabilly Rave USA tank top.

Thanks to everyone that came out that night to support Tom Ingram's event, the bands, and dancers, and to help me celebrate my birthday!

Rockin' The Rockabilly Scene

There is a new kid on the block, er, new book on the market: Rockin' The Rockabilly Scene. Have you heard about it? Everyone on facebook is talking about it.

Andrew Shaylor has traveled to various rockabilly weekenders overseas and in the US photographing examples of modern rockabilly culture. He also went to the Sun Records Studio in Memphis Tennessee. This book is full, cover to cover with colorful, full page photos bound in a hardcover. There is some writing: A fantastic forward by Jerry Chatabox. This book is a refreshing take on retro coffee table books because it isn't a book full of posed pinup models, but musicians! There are wonderful photos of The Caezars, Big Sandy, Deke Dickerson, Ashley Kingman, Rockin' Bonnie, Little Esther, Crazy Joe Tritschler, Larry and Lorrie Collins, Bobby Trimble, Miss Ruby Ann, Chris "Sugarballs" Sprague, Sage,  and many WILD records artist. There are also photos of rockabilly music fans, swing dancers, and burlesque beauties. Most of the photos are candid which paints a realistic portrait of the modern rockabilly culture.

I should also mention, there is a picture of The Rockabilly Socialite, Dollie DeVille!

I was beyond excited to receive the book in the mail and see a magnificent full page photo of myself!

This book has a permanent place on my coffee table, and it should have one on yours too. The book can be bought at: http://www.amazon.com/Rockin-Rockabilly-Scene-Andrew-Shaylor/dp/1858945283

I Got My Issue Of Vintage Life Mag

I finally got my paper issue of Vintage Life Mag! A big thanks to Lisa Freemont Street for sending it to me!

July 2011 issue

The issue includes a write up from Lisa Freemont Street on VLV. It is nice to see a magazine that is current, as the US mags seem to wait almost a year before the coverage shows up in the mag.

And there is little old me!

Again, so thankful to Lisa Freemont Street and Vintage Life for including my photo!
